ON-THE-RECORD EVENTS STATEMENT

 

Press are welcome to attend in their official capacity. Photography, video recording, and direct quotation from speakers and participants are permitted. Coverage can reflect the context and intent of the discussion. Please email thechicagoforum@uchicago.edu in advance to notify us of your attendance and coordinate any press needs.

 

OFF-THE-RECORD EVENTS STATEMENT

 

To uphold the Chicago Forum’s commitment to candid dialogue and the uninhibited exchange of ideas, some events are designated as Off-the-Record.

 

This designation creates a space where participants can explore, challenge, and test ideas without concern for external broadcast.

 

Off-the-Record Means:

  • No press in their official capacity may attend.

  • No video, audio, or photographic recording is permitted.

  • No direct quotes, paraphrasing, summaries, or attribution of remarks is allowed.

  • Comments made in the room, whether by speakers or audience members, may not be published, posted, or shared externally in any form.

 

Student Reflections: What’s Permitted

Students are welcome to engage intellectually with the experience of the event and may share personal reflections that do not reveal the substance of the discussion.

 

Students Can Write About:

  • General themes or big questions raised by the event (without referencing how they were discussed)

  • The atmosphere or format of the event

  • Their own learning, insights, or shifts in perspective

  • Meta-level observations about dialogue, inquiry, or process

  • Why the event mattered to them personally

 

These reflections should remain impressionistic, experiential, and non-descriptive of specific arguments.

 

Students Cannot Write About:

  • Specific ideas, arguments, or positions expressed by speakers or participants

  • Any quotes, paraphrases, or summaries of remarks

  • Any content that could be traced back to an individual

  • Any description that conveys what was said by whom
