When Values Collide

Free expression is central to open inquiry, but it is not without tension. As institutions grapple with how to support both robust debate and the well-being of their communities, questions emerge about what free speech should protect and why.

Featuring Mary Anne Franks, Professor of Law at George Washington University Law School and Chicago Forum Spring Fellow, Geoffrey R. Stone, Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor at University of Chicago Law School, and moderated by Tom Ginsburg, Chicago Forum Faculty Director, this discussion explores how we navigate competing values while sustaining a culture of rigorous, open dialogue.

The event is open to the public and in partnership with International House.

It will include time for audience Q&A with a brief reception featuring menu items from Chicago Spanish tapas restaurant Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba to follow. UChicago or government-issued IDs will be checked upon entry.
