The Zell Series

With the generous support of the Zell family, the Zell Series hosts speakers, panels and events throughout the year that demonstrate and directly address challenges related to academic freedom and free expression in a variety of contexts, providing venues for interaction with students and faculty as well as the practical application of thinking and behavior rooted in the values of free expression and open discourse.

A Discussion with Pratap Mehta on Academic Freedom and Other Unfreedoms: India in Comparative Perspective

One of India’s finest scholars and public minds, Pratap Mehta is Laurence S. Rockefeller Professor for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton University. In addition to his previous roles as Vice-Chancellor of Ashoka University, and President of the Center for Policy Research in Delhi, Mehta has also held teaching positions at Harvard, Ashoka University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and NYU Law School. He has published widely in political theory, history of ideas, Indian constitutional law and politics in India, including his book, The Burden of Democracy (Penguin 2003), and several edited volumes. He is (most recently) co-editor, with Madhav Khosla and Sujit Choudhry, of the Oxford Handbook to the Indian Constitution, and his forthcoming work looks at the philosophical ideas about religion in 20th century India. He is also a fellow of the British Academy and SSRC Fellow for 2020.
