The University of Chicago Forum for Free Inquiry and Expression Fellows program provides a unique opportunity for leading scholars and practitioners to be in residence at UChicago. Fellows draw on their first-hand experiences, research, and professional networks to offer distinctive perspectives on freedom of expression across varied contexts, traditions, and histories.
The inaugural Chicago Forum Fellows were selected based on their work on freedom of expression, its relationship to Forum priorities, and their ability to foster collaboration across the University.

Yaqiu Wang is a Chinese human rights and democracy researcher and advocate whose work over the past 15 years has focused on freedom of expression, the protection of human rights defenders, women’s rights, and minority rights in China. Nominated by Johanna Ransmeier of the Department of History, Wang brings deep expertise and a prominent voice on Chinese repression, helping students understand the costs of restricted expression for autonomy and intellectual freedom. As a Forum Fellow, she will conduct independent research, deliver a public lecture, participate in Forum events, and meet with faculty and students.

Deepa Das Acevedo is a legal anthropologist and Associate Professor of Law at Emory University. She is the author of The War on Tenure. At the Forum, Deepa gave a talk about her book and discussed her ongoing research on tenure in higher education.

Patrick Weil is a political scientist and Senior Research Fellow at the French National Centre for Scientific Research. He is the author of The Sovereign Citizen: Denaturalization and the Origins of the American Republic (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2013). During his time at the Forum, Weil delivered a public lecture on U.S. nationality laws, tracing their history and evolution.
